So, I’ve long thought “If something like The Hunt For Red October is the archetypal 80s thriller, and Larry Bond’s Cauldron is the archetypal 90s thriller, what’s the archetypal 2000s thriller?”
Then it hit me. The Da Vinci Code. Gulp.

I’m not sure I’d call Cauldron the archetypal ’90s thriller if we’re looking beyond the military techno-thriller genre-as I guess we are with the mention of the Dan Brown. (If that’s the case I’d have to give the win there to John Grisham, and probably The Firm.) But your choices for the ’80s and ’00s certainly seem appropriate to me for the thriller genre as a whole.
